6.8 Earthquake Rocks Western Washington

On Wednesday, February 28, 2001, at 10:55 AM, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the northwest. For about thirty seconds the state of Washington was shaking violently. After it stopped, news helicopters immediately rushed to the State Capitol in Olympia. One thing became confirmed by reporters and architects, there were cracks in the dome. Officials later said that there were ten pillars that moved at least 4 inches. The one shown at left is so fragile architects said it could be pushed over with a foot. The legislature, which was in session, had to move to hearing rooms outside of the capitol. Although the repairs could take years, the building was opened on April 23 to the public.
