Washington State Senate
The marble on the walls in the Senate is German
and the desks are mahogany. The carpet features English Dogwoods as well as larger Coastal Rhododendrons. In the State of
Washington there are 49 legislative districts. In the Senate there
are 49 members, as one is elected from each district. Senators are
elected for four year terms. Senators meet in the "chambers" to
take final action on bills and resolutions. The also have individual
office spaces and committee hearing rooms.
Legislative sessions always begin on the second
Monday of January. They last 105 days in odd numbered years and 60
days in the even years. The galleries are always open to the
public.
The Lieutenant Governor serves as the President of
the Senate during the legislative
session. He stands in the center of the rostrum and directs the
proceedings. The Lieutenant Governor also assumes the
responsibilities of the Governor when the Governor is out of
state.
