September 11 meeting offers first look at redevelopment

Effort would focus on southern edge of West Capitol Campus

OLYMPIA – The public is invited to a meeting Sept. 11 to take a look at and offer comments about the preliminary plans for redevelopment of the southern edge of the West Capitol Campus.

The Department of General Administration is in the early stages of examining options for the redevelopment of the 3.5-acre area currently occupied by the Newhouse Building, two Press Houses (former residences that the state leases to media organizations) and the Visitor Center. It is bounded by Capitol Way on the east, Water Street on the west, Sid Snyder Avenue on the north, and 15th Avenue on the south.

This meeting will be the first public opportunity to learn about the project, review various possible redevelopment concepts, offer comments and ideas and get answers to questions. The Legislature authorized the planning as part of the 2007-09 capital budget.

The meeting will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Columbia Room of the Legislative Building on the Capitol Campus.

General Administration manages the Capitol Campus, which includes several dozen buildings and 485 acres, including four parks and the 260-acre Capitol Lake.
