State group to discuss Capitol Lake issues

Estuary study, Heritage Park development, flooding concerns part of February meeting

OLYMPIA – When will lawn areas at Heritage Park be reopened? What is being done about water quality in Capitol Lake? What is happening with the study to determine if it is possible to turn Capitol Lake back into a saltwater estuary?

The public can learn more about these and other topics on Saturday, February 3, 2007, when the Capitol Lake Adaptive Management Plan Steering Committee hosts its annual meeting and open house.

The meeting will update the community on the progress being made to complete the 14 objectives outlined in the ten-year lake management plan, approved in 2003.

Specific agenda items include: an update on Heritage Park construction; Capitol Lake dam repairs and flood management; the Deschutes Estuary Feasibility Study; water quality testing being done in the watershed; and more.

The Capitol Lake Steering committee is a nine-member group of state, local and tribal government representatives who advise the Department of General Administration on the management of Capitol Lake. Capitol Lake was created in 1951 when the state constructed a dam where the Deschutes River flows into Puget Sound.

General Administration is the state agency responsible for day-to-day management of the 260-acre man-made lake.
