Winged Victory Restoration
A Capitol Campus icon marches back in time
A project to restore the Winged Victory Monument as closely as possible to its original condition begins August 18, 2008. When completed, the color of the bronze sculpture will change from the current bright gold to, a “rich golden brown,” as specified in original contract documents.
The Winged Victory Monument, dedicated in 1938, honors Washington citizens who served in World War I. The project is scheduled to be completed by September 30, 2008. The current phase of work will:
- Remove the gold-colored resin coating.
- Clean and repair the bronze surface.
- Restore the original finish through a chemical process.
